The grupetto, or gruppetto as it's also spelt, is a group of riders that have formed at the rear of the race, having either been dropped or having done their job for the team that day.
It is predominately made up of sprinters and heavier riders who aren't able to keep up with the best on the climbs. The aim of the grupetto is to get to the finish line safely within the time limit set for that day.
