Why can most riders produce more power on either the flat or on climbs? There are a couple of different theories, so we decided to do some proper science to test them out!

In association with LEOMO.

One possible explanation for the difference was that the greater inertia that comes from riding at faster velocities, meaning that you change the way you transfer power from your legs to the pedals.

The other theory is that the gradient of the road itself changes your relationship to the bike, specifically your position in relation to the cranks.

We're using the Leomo Type R to test out our theories. It’s like what you might find in an advanced bike fit, in the real world, AND in different conditions.

You could use it to analyse bike fit, tt position, all sorts really, but in this case, it’s going to allow us to keep a track of our body position and technique on the bike when riding at our VO2 max, both on the flat, and on a climb, in the real world but first, simulated indoors.
